What to Do When Family Caregivers Need More Help

When family caregivers start to feel overwhelmed, that is their big sign to start getting some extra help.

Family caregivers often wait to get help, sometimes waiting almost too long. The reasons for that can vary, but there are some similarities. For instance, family caregivers almost always feel as if they should be the ones handling everything for the seniors they love. In reality, respite care providers can handle whatever might come up, which allows family caregivers to take time away and come back recharged.

Bring in Extra Support

At the first sign of feeling overwhelmed, the best thing for family caregivers to do is to bring in extra help. Home care providers can be there on a flexible schedule that works for both seniors and family caregivers. Even if family caregivers don’t have a predictable schedule in mind for respite time, elder care services can offer the flexibility they need.

Prioritize Sleep

One reason that family caregivers feel stressed and overwhelmed is that they’re typically not getting enough sleep. Respite time allows them to step away from caregiving and focus on what they actually need. For all too many family caregivers, that’s a nap or even a good night’s sleep.

Schedule Time Away

As difficult as it might feel at first, family caregivers need to take time away on a consistent basis. Letting go of caregiving duties periodically allows them to think about something else for a little while. When they come back, it’s a lot easier to tackle the challenges that caregiving brings. Not taking that time away means that caregiving just becomes more and more difficult.

Set Up Time with Friends

Relationships are difficult to maintain when family caregivers have no time and no energy to devote to anything beyond caregiving tasks. The problem is that humans are social creatures. If family caregivers aren’t meeting their social needs, resentment builds, and they start to feel isolated. Respite care can be there, allowing family caregivers to spend time with friends and other people who recharge their social batteries.

Address Health Issues

Ask most family caregivers about their aging family member’s health and healthcare appointments, and they can probably offer a lot of information off the top of their heads. Ask about their own health, however, and it becomes obvious that they’ve either skipped appointments or are ignoring their health in other ways. Respite time allows family caregivers to get to their own doctors and dentists, which is essential if they want ot keep being family caregivers.

Manage Stress Effectively

Being a family caregiver is incredibly stressful. Even situations that are positive and mostly under control are still full of stress. It’s difficult to watch senior family members deal with new health issues and challenges as they age in place. Taking time for themselves allows family caregivers to manage their own stress in a healthy way that enables them to return to caregiving fully recharged.

Respite care can be there to resolve so many different issues for family caregivers. They don’t have to go through the challenges of caregiving alone. Taking the time away that they need, while also having the support to do so as often as they need to do it, keeps family caregivers on the job for the people they love.
