What Can Family Caregivers Do When They Feel Guilty About Respite Care?

Guilt is unfortunately very common for family caregivers when they start to think about taking time away. Working through those feelings is an important step in taking time away.

Caring for an aging family member is a complicated situation full of love and dedication. It can also be physically and emotionally exhausting when family caregivers aren’t taking the best possible care of themselves. Respite care offers family caregivers a much-needed break for a few hours or even a whole day. But many family caregivers find themselves struggling with the guilt of considering taking time away.

Plan to Do Something

One way to work through the discomfort of taking time away is to make a plan for that time. Instead of figuring out what to do later, which might seem like a waste of time in the moment, consider what needs to happen. Is rest appropriate? How about lunch with a friend? Planning different ways to use that time helps to give it more meaning and shifts the focus to something important that should be done.

Write Down What the Guilty Feelings Are About

Guilt is a big feeling, which can sometimes feel insurmountable. Taking a few minutes to write down what the guilty feelings are really about can bring some clarity. Worries about abandoning aging adults or feeling like family caregivers should be able to do everything alone are common. And when they’re in writing, it can be easier to see why those thoughts might not be accurate.

Talk to Other Family Caregivers

Connecting with other family caregivers and talking to them about how they use the time when home care providers are with their family members can help a lot, too. There are lots of ways to connect, either through online support groups or in person. Friends and other family members might have experience being family caregivers, too. Talk with them about how they got around their feelings of guilt and what respite time looked like for them.

Imagine What Time Away Might Look Like

Sometimes the idea of something is way scarier than the reality of the situation. Picturing what a few hours or a whole day away might look like can help. For many family caregivers, it’s been a long time since they’ve had time to themselves, so it can be a little scary to imagine what that time might be like. Visualization is powerful, and it can help family caregivers realize that it’s been too long since they had a break.

Remember Self-care is Necessary

Being a caregiver isn’t about sprinting through the challenges. It’s a marathon and even the best marathon runners take a break while training or even during the race. Taking time away isn’t a selfish thing to do. In so many cases, it’s the one thing that allows family caregivers to come back time and again to keep caring for the seniors they love.

Taking respite time without guilt allows family caregivers to ground themselves, reset their energy, and rest. All of this is so important if they’re going to continue to be family caregivers. Respite care can be there, holding down the fort until family caregivers are ready to come back.
